Scene 1
Int. Restaurant
Marc sits at the dinner table, with his a full plate
of cold food before him. Dennis sits across the table from him, with a
mouth half full of food.
DENNIS
Where is your appetite. Jesus Christ, the show
was bad, but it’s nothing to kill yourself
about. I’d figure you’d be used to this sorta thing by now."
MARC
It’s not that. It’s something else. I can’t explain.
DENNIS
What the hell is wrong with you? All through the show tonight, you’ve
been standing in the corner, avoiding people, at your own show. How the
hell are we supposed to sell paintings when the goddamn artist is gone. I’ve been telling you, Marc, you’re not selling
these paintings, you’re selling yourself out
there. When the hell are gonna learn?
Marc sits there silent for a moment. He plays with his noodles, arranging
them in different patterns with the meatballs in different places.
MARC
I’m sorry Dennis. I’ll try to be more engaging next time.
DENNIS
Forget next time! I’ve heard that over and over from you. ‘I’m getting
closer’ you say. ‘This next show is going to be spectacular.’ But every
time it’s the same. Its all fluff. It’s got no…
umph. Now I know how smart you are, the brilliance you put into every
painting. We all know they’re beautiful, they’re interesting. But so is
wallpaper!

Scene 2
Int. Moving Car
MARC
“Do you think they learned one thing today?
MARILYN
Of course they did, Those kids loved you. They wanted me to ask you back.
Marc, you showed them something that they’d never seen before. They’ll
have a greater appreciation for what they see around them.
MARC
That surprises me. They had no idea what I was talking about. Sometimes,
I feel like I have no idea what I’m talking about.
MARILYN
You’re too hard on yourself Marc. You’ve got relax a bit,
give yourself a chance to breathe.
MARC
It’s just that I’m so close. I’ve done the calculations over and over,
and I’m getting closer to the ideal. I know it. The geometry of nature,
the beauty in everything in this world working, everything is knowable,
tangible. I know I can capture it.
MARILYN
Of course you can. You just have to let yourself capture it, allow it to
happen. You will find it, and people will embrace it. They will embrace
you.
MARC
My art isn’t about me.
