CONNOR SNEDECOR, Poison Oak:  A pair of old friends takes a hike, and one of whom's obsession with his own perceived misfortune brings their friendship and future to a  breaking point during a fateful, twisting and turning journey home.

I.

RAMONE

A couple days ago on the street I walked by this woman... beautiful -

green eyes and, uh green tennis shoes.

HUGH

And she had the other half of your ruby-eyed skull pendant, unlocking

the powers of-

Shot of GIRL from Ramone's POV, pan from shoes upwards.

Shut up. There was something about her... She looks at me for a second

or two, and she drops a five-dollar bill on the ground right in front

of me like she meant to do it. So I go  to pick it up, get up to give

it to her and she's gone in the crowd.

Hugh is holding a rock, and dismissively tosses it over his shoulder

into the bushes.

HUGH

What's your point? Is this your idea of good luck?

RAMONE

No. It's not.

HUGH

(Scoffs.)

What, then you think it's fate to meet her and then never see her again?

RAMONE

This isn't about you... it just happened.

II.

RAMONE

It's no wonder you're good at spotting it. Didn't you have big

problems with poison oak when we were kids?

HUGH

Yeah well I didn't have a friend with me.

RAMONE

I remember, you spent like two weeks with it in third grade. Ms.

Rookwell was mad like it was your fault.

HUGH

She had it out for me anyway.

RAMONE

(Laughingly)

You've still got a grudge?

Hugh stops walking.

HUGH

Well I'd drop it if I ever win the estimation jar, but...

Ramone turns to face him.

RAMONE

Too late. Anyway I never won it either, but (short thing, I liked it,

it was fun -just show it's not weighing on his mind)

Ramone turns and walks. Hugh pauses a second.

HUGH

(Retrospectively petulant)

Remember I had to make that petition-

RAMONE

(Lightly derisive)

Hah, yeah, for a second place prize...

HUGH

It was a dictatorship in the third grade!

RAMONE

Ah well, all school's unfair.

Hugh taps his walking stick against a tree trunk. We can't tell if it

is in frustration or just an idle gesture.

HUGH

(No longer nostalgic, seriously grudging now.)

It was way more unfair for me, I was a really good guesser.

RAMONE

A guess is a guess.

HUGH

Yeah but I was always closer than anyone else, then somebody who didn't

think about it for a second would get lucky.

RAMONE

You're not kidding...
