    NARRATIVE CINEMA & PRODUCTION PRACTICES

YUJIRO SEKI, Being Latino:  This story is about a Mexican aspiring to be a Sushi Chef who attempts to mix Mexican food with Japanese food.  However, his experiment is not well-received by all Japanese, by his ex-girl friend, or his roommate.  His ex-girlfriend, Lydia, is especially hostile to Manuel’s aspirations, insisting that he quit working at the Japanese restaurant and join her father’s brewery.  Many resist the idea of cultures learning about each other.  People generally stick to their own culture and are not open-minded toward influences from cultures other then their own.

EXT. IN FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT - DAY

The sign in front of the restaurant reads, “Due to the death

of the owner, Kinachi, Inochi is closed. We apologize for

any inconvenience.”

INT. JAPANESE RESTAURANT - DAY

Next day, Manuel, listening to the opera (Puccini), is making

a sashimi taco all by himself. Suddenly, Hideo appears.

Manuel quickly hides his experiment. Hideo glances at Manuel

with disgust. Hideo confidently walks toward the CD player

and turns off the music.

MANUEL

Hideosan... I’m really sorry about Kihachi...

HIDEO

To you.. kinachisan... a good man. also good father...

MANUEL

Definitely, Sir...

HIDEO

He lived good life, full life...  Long life...

MANUEL

Very profound, Sir...

There is a little awkward silence.

MANUEL (CONT'D)

Well, back to work... we are opening in a hour.

Manuel is about to resume cutting fish.

HIDEO

Wait, Manuel... Why don't you take the day off...?

MANUEL

...But, sir... we are behind...

Hideo interrupts Manuel.

HIDEO

Come to think of it. Don’t come tomorrow either.

MANUEL

(confused)

HIDEO

Sit down, my little brother (kodai)...

Hideo pushes Manuel toward a chair and gently makes him sit

down.

MANUEL

What is this all about, sir?

HIDEO

Well, Manuel... You are a good man...

MANUEL

(extreme confusion)

Hideo starts pacing around.

HIDEO

... And I really appreciate how

hard you worked for my family...

But... (Jeez... this is hard to

say)... but... You know what,

Manuel? As a new owner, I have

dream... You have a dream right? I

want this restaurant to be the best

“authentic” Japanese restaurant

around... No weird experiment...

No tacos other than octopus...

Manuel slowly getting it.

HIDEO (CONT'D)

the world-renowned restaurant...

... when people hear about my

restaurant in Paris... You got the

picture (changing the tone of

voice)...

Manuel stands up.

HIDEO (CONT'D)

So, you see the problem... it's a

little weird to see “authentic” and

Mexican working as a sushi chef...

MANUEL

(extreme confusion)

... But you don’t understand!

There is an awkward little silence.

MANUEL (CONT'D)

(disturbed)

... Are you firing me....?

HIDEO

I’m sorry but “we” don’t have any

other choice...

MANUEL

You can’t do that!!!

HIDEO

Please, Manuel... Let’s do this

without any commotion... This is

hard for me too... Brother...

MANUEL

But!! I have nowhere else to go

(looking at the woodcut print)...

HIDEO

Please, Manuel... Leave... don’t

make me call the police...
