VIVIAN PO, Wedding Bells:  A story about a Professor, who believes in ideal romantic love, and objects to his daughter’s marriage because he believes that her reasons for getting married are too pragmatic.  While he admires the pure love in a young couple in his class. As the story develops, we find that the professor fails to achieve the romantic love in his own marriage and the love between the young couple is putting them into danger.

SCENE SAMPLE 1

MICHAEL walks halfway to the car

                              SAM

ok. I know what you are going to say.

Don’t say it. We have discussed this

already. I won’t change my mind.

                              BENJAMIN

I am sorry but I am responsible for my

                    daughter’s happiness. You should never

                    marry someone you don’t love.

                              SAM

                    I love MICHAEL.

                              BENJAMIN

                    I don’t see it.

                              SAM

                         (in a low tone)

I don’t doubt it. You never see

                    anything.

                              BENJAMIN

                    Why do you love him?

                              SAM

Maybe you should ask why shouldn’t I

love him:  he provides everything I

need and he is the best looking boyfriend I ever

                    had.

                              BENJAMIN

That is exactly what I meant. You have a

problem falling in love. You are way too

practical. Real Love is just for the

sake of love, there shouldn’t be any

                    reason.

                              SAM

Excuse me. I don’t see the problem with

having a reason to love.  Love is simple:

someone cares about you and treats you

good, and... so you love him. Love doesn’t

                    have to be blind.

                              BENJAMIN

I don’t understand why you grew up to be

such a cold person.  Your mother and

I were a loving couple, we...

                              SAM

STOP, I don’t want to hear it.  Keep

                    mother out of this.

                              BENJAMIN

I know she wouldn’t like to see you

getting married for the wrong reason

                    any more than I do.

                              SAM

                    Never mind all that!

I don’t care if we agree about

this marriage or not, but you are not

qualified to speak for mother. And  don’t

waste your time, I am getting married

whatever you think. Don’t come to the

engagement party if you can’t accept my

                    marriage. That’s fine to me.

SAM leaves her father and walks back to the car.

SCENE SAMPLE 2

Over her shoulder, we see a guy, David, running

quickly towards her. he slows down, pull down his

cap, and walks towards her back with quick steps.

He scares her from the back, she screams a little

bit. She turns her head over and recognizes it is

him and laughs. He gives her a gentle hug which

          lasts some time.

                              BONNIE

Hey... why are you so late today? we

only have 10 minutes to get to class.

He leans towards the bench breathing.

                              DAVID

                         (out of breath)

I need two minutes after all this

                    running.

                              BONNIE

(tries to pull him up from the bench)

Come on.. get up, we should go right now

                              DAVID

                               (tired)

Naah... we can get there in five minutes.

DAVID pulls her down on the bench.

                              DAVID

Come on, just sit here with me for two

                    minutes, please.

The girl smiles and sits next to him.

          The boy leans on her.

                              BONNIE

Why are you so late today anyway?

He pulls out a brown paper bag from behind and

points to it. The girl’s eyes glow.

                              BONNIE

                           Thank you!

She stretches her hand to grab it. DAVID pulls

          it out of her reach.

                              DAVID

who says that this is for you, it took

me half an hour to get it.

He put out his hand. Bonnie puts her

brown paper bag into his hand.

                              DAVID

                          what is this?

                              BONNIE

See for yourself. I don’t gurantee it is

                    tasty.

He looks into the bag while she grabs

the bag she wants. They exchange their lunches.

She gets her favorite sandwiches while he gets a

box of homemade pasta from her. They smile.

                              DAVID

Maybe we should just skip this class for

today, since... we are already late.

She looks at her watch, recognizes that they are

really running late. She pulls him up from the

bench and they walk quickly hand in hand into the

          building.
