Daniel, however, finds that the cause of this is not simply about plagiarism, but about faculty and student relationship and the school’s role in accepting other cultural understandings. When he plans to write an article he faces obstacles. Journalism school wants to keep its reputation. In the end, the dean of the journalism school makes him an offer…

 

Scene 6

int. inside of classroom, consisting twelve people.

Mel Chase is in front of board. He writes “God is in the detail.”

dean

(to the whole class) Why are you here? To be introduced to people at the Times? To get connection? …let me tell you. If you write well, you would get that job. How do you write well… details. God is in the detail.

dean

Now who would like to go on? (he looks around. )

No one is responding.

dean

(looking at Michelle’s direction) Michelle?

Daniel

I’d like to go on.

Dean

(turning and looking at Daniel’s direction) very well. (he goes through Daniel’s paper.)

dean

Single, or double sink?

Daniel

Double. Stainless steel. Separate hot and cold knobs, pistol-grip-style with porcelain handles. No spray nozzle.

dean

What kind of food dried on the dishes?

daniel

Spaghetti. Canned Sauce. The kind with extra mushrooms and garlic.

dean

The model of refrigerator?

daniel

Amana.

dean

Calendar?

Daniel

The calendar had a painting of an old stone New England mill, Daniel speaks, the waterwheel kind.

dean

Damn you’re good.

 

Scene 4

 

 

 

It’s very dark.  Daniel’s car is parked in the same spot. From a window, Michelle Yeoh is walking from a distant, both of her hands holding plastic bags. Daniel gets out.

Cut to: Daniel is in front of Michelle on a China town street.

Michelle

What are you doing here?

Daniel

Trying to help you.

Daniel snatches bags from her.

Cut to: in front of Michelle’s apartment.

Michelle

Thank you for helping.

Daniel

I’d like to talk to you.

Michelle

Not a good time. Friends are coming over.

Daniel

been waiting for six hours.

Cut to: michelle’s apartment. dark.

Her apartment is very tiny, and there’s a poster of calligraphy on a wall. On her desk is a page with calligraphy. Next to the page is another page in a same calligraphy.

daniel

What’s this? Calligraphy?

michelle

(nods)

daniel

This seems cool.

michelle

It calms you.

daniel

Can you write my name in Chinese?

Michelle smiles and nods. She hands a brush to Daniel. Daniel grabs it and Michelle grabs Daniel’s hand. Daniel looks at her but Michelle hushes him up. Michelle moves Daniel’s hand, and tips of brush writes a character. At some point, they both look at each other, almost as if they were going to kiss.

daniel

I need to talk to you.

michelle

(smiles)

Daniel

(hesitantly)About… about the incident in journalism school.

michelle

(frowning)I don’t want to talk about it.

Daniel

Please…

Bell rings.

michelle

I think my friends are here. You need to go.
