MATTHEW KENT,  A C Y S T:  A traumatized Airforce ranger comes back from the middle east, only to discover things have changed since he left, and the love that he thought he was serious enough for, requires much more consideration and bravery than he could have ever expected.

Int. – italian Resteraunt, Night

Michael and Marie are sitting at a table in the restaurant talking about their past, reminiscing over old times.

Michael

He wasn’t mad at you, he just thought we were doing something else.

Michael smiles as Marie laughs a little at the memory.

Overlapping dialogue:

Marie

We were only laughing

Michael

. . . our laughing didn’t exactly sound innocent sometimes.

Both Marie and Michael momentarily laugh at each other.

Marie

All I remember was his blood shot eyes, how mad he seemed.

Michael

Well, he’s a light sleeper. It’s just how dad is when he wakes up.

(a moment)

You know, both my parents actually liked you a lot.

Marie

Liked?

Michael

Okay, my mom still gives me the third degree… “Why did you break up with that sweet girl!?”… and dad…

Marie

Michael…

Michael

What?

Marie

Ya

Michael

What? We’ve been able to talk about us before. What’s wrong?

Marie

(evading an answer points at the setting) Don’t you think I can see what you’re doing?

He smiles

Michael

I’m buying you dinner?

Marie

And he deflects with humour.

Michael

You always did like that 3rd person thing.

Marie

Because you never got it.

Michael

Hey, I do now. Ok? Joking aside what’s really going on?

Marie

Nothing Michael. (pause) It’s just that life… went on. You left.

Michael

Which means? You’re seeing someone.

Marie

No, not exactly. Not anymore.

Michael

Well if you are, or did, it’s ok, I mean I did leave. It’s not like we made…

Marie

(interrupts) I’m pregnant Michael!

Michael pauses mid-sentence not sure how to react

Michael

(a moment) Your pregnant(?)(.)

Marie

I’m pregnant.

Michael

Wow. . . Were you (pause) and him, planning on it?

Marie

No. .  . (thinking about the next thing) Umm… there’s something else.

Michael

So there is someone.

Marie

No! God Michael! (sigh) I had an ultrasound done this morning before you came. They found something unexpected on the chart.

Michael

Is it serious?

Marie

(interrupt) They’re not sure yet, but there’s a chance, it might cause some complications at birth.

michael

For the baby?

Marie

For me. It could cause internal bleeding or something. I could die.

Michael and Jake:

Michael, unshaven for days, sits at his desk, looking preoccupied and slightly agitated. He stops for a moment and stretches his left shoulder, his sling no longer on his arm. Jake enters his cubicle.

Jake

Hey, you know what the difference is between a light bulb and a pregnant woman is?

Michael

Fuck off man.

Jake

You can unscrew a light bulb. Ain’t that some funny shit?

Michael

Why do you gotta say crap like that?

Jake

Cause if you were gonna get with her, you would have done it already.

Michael

You don’t what you’re talking about.

Jake

I don’t huh? When was the last time you slept? When was the last time we worked out, dude, you asked me to help you get your shoulder back in shape. And I seen you mute your phone when she calls.

Michael

And? So what, I’m having nightmares, and I don’t wanna to talk to her. So?

Jake

No, fuck that! You just don’t want to be a man. You can’t say no, but you won’t say yes, and you can’t have it both ways… otherwise the shit’s gonna get decided for you!

Michael

(silent)

Jake

If I were you, I wouldn’t give Marie a second thought, but I get it, there’s something there for you. But you missed your chance; it’s time to move on man.

Michael

Ya (mixed with a sigh)

Jake

Call me when you’re done moping.
